Tackling Seasonal Allergies the Right Way

When spring rolls around, you may love the idea of flowers blooming and the trees being full of leaves again. However, with spring not only comes beautiful foliage, but also the seasonal allergies that plague many people as plants begin to reproduce.

Seasonal allergies cause all sorts of symptoms that can be anywhere from uncomfortable to unbearable, depending on their severity. Some of the symptoms you may experience from seasonal allergies can include:

  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Runny, stuffy nose
  • Congestion
  • Wheezing, coughing
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches

When your body experiences these symptoms from plant pollen, it’s because your body is having an immune response to a perceived bodily invader. An allergic reaction is one where your body identifies a substance as an invader and then sends the immune system in to attack the source. During the process, mast cells release histamines in an attempt to rid the body of the foreign substance, creating an allergic reaction. Our bodies react to some substances instead of others because of unique immunoglobulins in the body that pair with specific substances.

What can you do about seasonal allergies?

While it can sometimes feel hopeless to try and tackle seasonal allergies, there are actually many different things you can do to both prevent and treat your seasonal allergies. Some of the most common treatment options include taking antihistamines during the time of year you struggle with seasonal allergies the most. While this is a perfectly fine way to treat your allergies, the ideal option would be to prevent them from happening at all. There are a couple of approaches you can take to address this.

A healthy immune system is going to be less reactionary to mild issues, like seasonal allergies, than a depleted immune system. A depleted immune system will react far greater to small problems than is necessary. Providing the proper immune support for your body will help to improve your immune system and help it cope with stressors–such as allergies–much easier. You can also work with an allergist to work towards desensitizing you from whatever your particular allergy trigger may be. This could include allergy shots or other forms of exposure to the allergens to build up your body’s ability to recognize friend and foe.

Ideally, you will want to cope with seasonal allergies in a healthy, natural way versus having to take loads of antihistamines and medications. In order to do this, you have to continue to strengthen your immune system so it can properly recognize actual invaders. You can’t just take care of your immune system a couple months out of the year; it’s a year round activity.
